Bring the Classroom to Life

No textbook, documentary or PowerPoint can match the power of standing on the very ground where history happened.

Guided battlefield tours for schools, led by Andrew White, are designed to help your students connect with history in a way that’s meaningful, emotional and unforgettable. Whether it’s walking through the trenches of the Western Front or standing on the beaches of Normandy, the experience is immersive, curriculum-relevant and expertly guided.

And it’s far more than just a walk around a cemetery.

Every tour is personally led by me, Andrew White. After 26 years in the Royal Air Force, including active service in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Iraq, I turned my focus to helping young people engage with military history—not just through facts, but through human stories, context and consequence.

I’ve guided school groups across Europe for over two decades. I know how to pitch each tour to your students’ age and ability, from wide-eyed Year 9s to thoughtful A-Level historians. Every site visit is grounded in historical accuracy and brought to life through storytelling, hands-on activities and respectful reflection.

More Than a Tour – A Living Experience

Every tour I lead is brought to life with activities that help students feel the past as well as understand it. That might include:

• Dressing up in replica kit to understand what soldiers wore, carried and endured

• Weapon demonstrations — how rifles were loaded, how equipment was used under pressure

• Discipline drills and wartime routines that explore command structures and the psychology of obedience

• Reading real love letters from soldiers to their sweethearts, connecting pupils to the emotional reality of conflict

• Tactical discussions — why a battle unfolded the way it did, and what decisions were made on the ground

Students don’t just learn about war—they engage with it, ask questions, form opinions and carry the experience back into their classroom discussions and essays.

Tailored to Fit Your Students’ Studies

All tours are adapted to suit your curriculum and cohort. Common themes include:

• World War I: Life in the trenches, leadership and command, the Somme, Ypres, medical care, remembrance

• World War II: The Holocaust, D-Day and the Normandy Campaign, resistance movements, occupation and liberation

• The Cold War: Berlin Wall, Soviet occupation zones, espionage history, the divided city of Berlin, NATO vs Warsaw Pact tensions

• Cross-Curricular Links: Citizenship, ethics, politics, PSHE, war literature and poetry

We’re particularly well-suited to Year 9, GCSE and A-Level study. Click here to download a sample itinerary for excursions of 2-5 days in length.

The guides were fantastic! Totally hands on and they related really well to the pupils and staff. They could not have done a better job for us. It was an excellent experience, and Sean and Andy were professional and approachable throughout. We all really enjoyed their company and we leaned from their knowledge. They presented it in an engaging and accessible manner. The best part of the tour for me was: the role played by Andy and Sean.

Reigate Grammar, 2019

Guides were both very knowledgeable and the information delivered widened students knowledge on the specification but also placed events into the wider context. Both very helpful and adapted tour to suit the needs of the students. A very thorough and well organised tour. The tours guides who were obviously very enthusiastic and were great with the students. The students today couldn't stop talking about Berlin.

I would like to pass on my gratitude as the tour guide you selected Andrew White was excellent. Andrew had a great amount of knowledge on the subject and he engaged really well with the young ladies who because they felt so comfortable with Andrew asked questions freely, even on a chilly morning on Utah Beach. I am not usually one to write emails like this but I think credit where credit is due.

All members of staff felt that the guides were outstanding. They were clearly well informed about the topics and their personal enthusiasm and joy certainly impacted positively on our students. In particular I was impressed with the resources the guides had with them which really added a personal touch to the information they were giving our students.

Both Dickie and Andy were superb and incredibly informative to both staff and pupils. Students were engaged and lots of boys told me it was their best ever trip. Our guides were such an excellent resource for us.

The teachers were impressed with Andy as he had lots of research and spoken to the foundation department before the tour. They felt that it helped make the tour feel more personal. They couldn’t have been more positive regarding Andy.
